What is Your Bodybuilding Body Type?

Try and name a sport that you can participate in even if you are an old person. Chances are, you will have a hard time naming even one. But if you named bodybuilding, you are dead on right.

Bodybuilding is the art and science of developing the musculature of your body via certain kinds of physical exertion and diet whose end goal is to showcase the body for competitive exhibition. The most popular kind of bodybuilding exercise is weightlifting or weight training.

What makes bodybuilding so appealing is that it is a sport that everyone of any age can participate in. The only requirements are that one be in relatively good physical condition, has access to gym equipment, and can financially afford the lifestyle it demands.

What are the different types of bodybuilding workouts? Well, it depends first on whether your body type is that of an ectomorph, endomorph or mesomorph.

An ectomorph is considered the slow gainer among bodybuilding types. He needs to slow down his hyper metabolism in order to gain muscle size and strength. This means his exercise routine should be severe enough to trigger muscle growth yet short enough to avoid nervous drain.

An endomorph, on the other hand, has a sluggish metabolism. He needs some kind of stimulating exercise every session in order to rev up his metabolism. Also, an endomorph should restrict his calorie intake due to an over-efficient digestive system that makes him gain weight easily.

The luckiest among the body types (as far as bodybuilding is concerned) is the mesomorph. A true mesomorph is able to gain muscle even with little effort on his part. Mesomorphs can be said to be gifted with muscle-building abilities, the Chosen People of bodybuilding.

No one belongs solely to one body type. Most people can be said to be a mixture of the three. However, one body type usually dominates a person?s build so that it is relatively easy to categorize bodybuilders.

Despite one?s body type, there are common techniques to follow when bodybuilding. These are:

  1. Keep a training diary so that you can monitor your progress and determine what you should aim for in the future.
  2. Pay attention when lifting any kind of weight to avoid injury. Carelessness is probably the foremost cause of injuries in bodybuilding.
  3. Choose the types of exercises that can contract as many muscle fibers as possible during one set. This will maximize the effectiveness of the core repetitions which make up most of one?s training.
  4. Warm up properly prior to doing any exercise to prevent injury.
  5. Don?t change the technique of doing any exercise unless you know what you are doing. Experimenting is another cause of injury.
  6. Don?t do those exercises which are known to cause tendon or joint damage.
  7. Good exercise style prevents injury. So keep proper form while exercising.
  8. Learn to distinguish between the pain caused by lactic acid build-up within the muscle, and the pain caused by a serious injury. Mistaking one for the other could cause you to keep exercising despite being injured, thereby worsening the injury. Rest if you are injured.
  9. Practice stretching before working out. This also helps you ward off injuries.

Hopefully, these tips will help you enjoy participating in the sport of bodybuilding

Home Gyms

The buzzword today is comfort. With the advancement in ideas and technology, there is an inclination to bring home the pleasures you generally find outside of it. A home gym is one such comfort. The television media is the perfect platform to showcase home gym products, and you find manufacturers advertising their products with all flair and gusto.

The presence of exercise equipment at your home is a great motivation to keep yourself in good physical shape. The benefits of having a gym at home are endless. Firstly, there would be no need for exorbitant membership fees, though gyms do offer the services of a trainer and in some cases massages, luxuries one does not necessarily get at home. Also, as many would agree, there is no more annoying feeling than a shortage of machines to work on. Having a personal set of equipment would mean more discipline and the right workouts at the right time.

Home gyms can be an exorbitant deal. However, if one is willing to purchase the machine and work with it diligently, then results are guaranteed over the long run. The exercise equipment can also be tuned to your personal needs, and a home gym rids the minor adjustments one would have to make in a public gym.

Before buying the equipment, though, the prudent thing to do would be to test it in the store you are buying from. That way you can be certain that the machines purchased matches up to your needs. The machines should be uncomplicated to assemble, mobile and easy to pack away. Incompetently made equipment can result in serious long-term injury.

If one keeps in mind these things while purchasing home gym equipment, then the personal gym is enjoyable and comfortable to work on. There is nothing like having exercise machines for workout 24/7.

Weight Training at Home vs. the Gym

Gyms are great. They offer their users the latest and greatest exercise gadgetry, well lighted spaces, wall-to-wall mirrors, and strategically placed TVs you can watch if you get tired of staring at yourself sweating.

For some people, gyms are also a place to meet folks and to enjoy camaraderie with fellow fitness buffs and fitness seekers. There are people there to spot you on difficult or potentially risky exercises, or to give you advice on the best ways to flatten a tummy or build bulging biceps.

If you can afford the fee--and, more importantly, if you have the commitment to actually go on a regular basis--by all means, join a gym.

I always advise my own clients, though, to begin their weight training program at home. There are several reasons for this:

Beginners, especially, are often self-conscious working out in front of others--particularly if those others happen to be better toned or more chiseled than they. This is not often a problem in one's own home (where you can even close the blinds if need be!).

At home, you can exercise practically any time of day or night. No need to forgo a workout because the gym is closed or it's inconvenient to get up and out the door to drive there.

Starting a workout program at home offers an inexpensive way to give weight training a tryout before committing deeply to it.

Although I happen to think that weight training is good for everyone, I know, realistically, that some individuals just aren't going to stick with it for more than a few weeks at most. It's better not to sign a gym membership contract until you know you're in it for the long haul.

Now, if you're just beginning weight training, and you're going to do it at home, please don't rush out and spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on equipment. You can easily embark on your new workout adventure for less than a hundred bucks. I recommend the following:

A set of dumbbells. For most people in average condition, a good starter set would consist of two 10-pound and two 15-pound weights, with perhaps a couple of 25-pound weights to grow into. If you feel yourself to be weaker or less fit than average, you could get a couple of 5- or 8- pounders as well and use these lighter weights as you accustom yourself to the exercises.

An exercise bench. A basic bench (non-adjustable) will serve you fine, but if you can spring for it, get one that lets you vary the angle of the back piece. Some of the best exercises to help you rapidly build muscles require that your body be inclined while you perform them.

An exercise mat. On a recent visit to a Target store I found 6 different "exercise mats" and another 8 "yoga mats" (which will also work for our purposes). Try to find one that will accommodate your entire length when lying stretched out on it. It should also be reasonably comfortable. You won't be using the mat for your weights workout, but rather for doing supplementary exercises such as abdominal crunches and leg raises.

If you find yourself taking to weight training and decide you want to make it a regular part of your life for a long time to come, then--and only then--you can look at purchasing additional equipment, such as heavier dumbbells, barbells or a cable weight machine. Some people, of course, end up going all out and building an actual gym in their home.

Nevertheless, the basic equipment as outlined above should meet your workout needs for the first few months--and possibly for much longer.

Denny Waldarmo is a fitness coach and a strong proponent of weight training, particularly the system taught in "The Truth About Building Muscle."
